Anatomy for Figure Drawing

Four class workshop taught by Lacey Lewis at InterUrban ArtHouse, 8001 Conser Street Suite 290, Overland Park, Kansas 66204

Class times: 6pm – 8pm, Tuesdays in April (April 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th)
Fee: $140 per person

In this class, we will study the major muscles and bones that most affect the surface of the human form. In addition to learning about the overall structure of the figure, students will learn about important bones and muscles, and most importantly will learn how to study anatomy and find it evident in the live figure.

We will study a few parts of the anatomy at a time, learning what the function of each particular muscle or bone is and why it's an important feature in figure drawing. We will spend part of each class creating anatomical diagrams before we move on to studies of the figure in action.

Upon completion of this class, students will have a better understanding of the structure and function of the human figure and will have the tools to continue more in depth self-study moving forward. This will lead to more informed and better proportioned life drawings and will greatly improve drawings done from imagination.

Portrait Painting from Photos

Four class workshop taught by Lacey Lewis at InterUrban ArtHouse in Overland Park, KS.

Class times: 6pm – 8pm, Tuesdays in Feb & March (Feb 23rd and March 1st, 8th, 15th)
Fee: $140 per person
Sign-up on InterUrban ArtHouse's website

In this four week class, Lacey Lewis will walk you through all aspects of painting realistic oil
portraits from photographs. Topics covered will include lighting and photographing the model,
identifying an ideal reference for a painting, how to achieve an accurate drawing and likeness,
mixing skin tones and applying them correctly, and how to use edges, the background, and
other compositional elements to create a strong focal point.

This class is perfect for anyone interested in portrait or figure painting, whether a novice or more
experienced artist. While it is helpful to have some experience drawing or using oil paint, though it is not requisite to participate.

Sign-up on InterUrban ArtHouse's website!

Materials List

Paints: Please buy artist quality paints. Winsor & Newton is an affordable quality brand. I will mention the brand names I use, though you are not required to purchase the same brand.

Titanium white
Cadmium yellow light
Cadmium red
Quinacridone rose
French ultramarine blue (W&N)
Phthalocyanine turquoise (W&N)
Cadmium green
Burnt sienna
Burnt umber
Ivory black

Surfaces: Please bring a couple small canvases or gessobords approximately 5”x7” for color studies. A larger canvas or gessobord for the main portrait project should be between 9” x 12” and “16 x 20”. Feel free to tone them a light brown or light gray if you like, but again this is not required.

Please, though, make sure that your surface is not so smooth that it’s shiny or slippery, as the paint will have difficulty adhering.

Brushes: I recommend a mix of large natural bristle brushes and small synthetic brushes that are smooth to the touch, but pert. A favorite synthetic brush is Monarch, and I prefer filberts and rounds to flats or brights, but any quality brand will do.

Other: Flat palette (a palette with wells is difficult to clean)
Paper towels
Palette cup
Charcoal pencils
Easel (optional)
Camera for first class (optional)

Oil Painting with Value and Color

Four class workshop taught by Lacey Lewis
