In celebration of The Foundry Art Centre's 5th Anniversary, the Off the Wall $95 Art Sale is a show and sale of 5”x”7” artworks donated by local, regional, and national artists. All proceeds from the sale will support exhibitions and programs at the Foundry Art Centre located in St. Charles, Missouri. Lacey is donating a 7"x5" portrait from life.

Lacey Lewis, "The New Ateliers: Traditional Influences in Contemporary Art and Education"

Figurative and portrait artist Lacey Lewis will discuss the recent renewal of interest in realism and atelier-style training in visual art. Lewis is a representational oil painter and draughtsman who resides and maintains a studio in Kansas City , KS . She works in a style that can be described as ‘classical realism,’ though her subject matter tends toward the contemporary. Her rendering is reminiscent of the Old Masters as she has and continues to study their works, the methods of teaching later employed by the Academy, and the works and writings of modern masters.

Lacey Lewis will touch upon some of the reasons why a growing number of young artists are seeking out traditional atelier-style training in order to become a new generation of realists. She will briefly compare and contrast paintings and drawings by old and contemporary realists and highlight the ‘artistic lineage’ that links the studios of the Old Masters with today’s ateliers.

Finally, Lewis will focus much of the program on reviewing various methods and procedures that were used in the private studios of 15th-19th century artists, in the French Academy, and that are now employed in modern ateliers. She will explain the progression ateliers generally follow as students learn specific skills sequentially. She will also share visuals from plates used by the Academy to train artists, images from modern Ateliers, and give a basic overview of sight-size measuring.

Danette Velez Update
September 20th, our friend Danette passed away after a 2 year battle with cancer. Please read this article that ran in the Sun, or this post from my blog announcing her transition. Kansas Arts Commission Mini-Fellowship in Visual Arts

Lacey Lewis was awarded a 2007 Kansas Artist Mini-Fellowship from the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Senator Chris Steineger presents the award to Lacey.

H&R Block World Headquarters 10-20-06 through 01-22-07
A large display of Lacey's portraiture work is in the lobby of the new H&R Block World Headquarters now through mid January. The new elliptical building is on the SE corner of 13th and Main.

Governor's Invitational
Lacey's pastel painting "Cris" was among 11 paintings selected to hang in Kansas Governor Sebelius' private conference room at the Kansas Statehouse. The painting is on display through February 1, 2007.


"Back to the Future" Pi Gallery Retrospective 11-30-06 through 12-30-06
Lacey's work will be included in Pi's end of the year retrospective, which will feature pieces from each artist that has exhibited at Pi in 2006.

Lawrence Art Guild Association Career Opportunity Grant
In June, Lacey was awarded an honorable mention grant by the Lawrence Art Guild. The grant will be used towards funding a mini-apprenticeship with Living Master Virgil Elliott.

An extention of the previous month's discussion on realism, this presentation focuses on the impact of modernism on formal art education. New developments such as the reemergence of the atelier and a new focus on traditional methods will also be explored.

First Fridays: Lacey Lewis on Choosing Realism 03-03-06
A presentation and informal discussion on why Lacey chose to be a traditional realist even though, because of modernism, there are so many other choices. She also explored issues of the impact of modernist art on public opinion of the arts and artists themselves, and what developments currently relate to the promotion of and return to classic/traditional standards.
