Danette Velez Update

September 20th, our friend Danette passed away after a 2 year battle with cancer. Please read this article that ran in the Sun, or this post from my blog announcing her transition. Kansas Arts Commission Mini-Fellowship in Visual Arts

Lacey Lewis was awarded a 2007 Kansas Artist Mini-Fellowship from the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

Senator Chris Steineger presents the award to Lacey.

 

An awards reception was held on the evening of March 7, 2007 in Topeka, KS at the office of John C. Peterson.

Marketing for Artists - OPAL Program 02-28-07
Lacey gave a presentation online reflecting on the past year's marketing efforts and outlining marketing techniques and local opportunities for artists. This event was made possible through the Johnson County Libraries and OPAL.

H&R Block World Headquarters 10-20-06 through 01-22-07

A large display of Lacey's portraiture work is in the lobby of the new H&R Block World Headquarters now through mid January. The new elliptical building is on the SE corner of 13th and Main.

Governor's Invitational

Lacey's pastel painting "Cris" was among 11 paintings selected to hang in Kansas Governor Sebelius' private conference room at the Kansas Statehouse. The painting is on display through February 1, 2007.


"Back to the Future" Pi Gallery Retrospective 11-30-06 through 12-30-06
Lacey's work will be included in Pi's end of the year retrospective, which will feature pieces from each artist that has exhibited at Pi in 2006.

Lawrence Art Guild Association Career Opportunity Grant
In June, Lacey was awarded an honorable mention grant by the Lawrence Art Guild. The grant will be used towards funding a mini-apprenticeship with Living Master Virgil Elliott.

Solo Show at the Spotlight Gallery in the Unity Church of Overland Park April and May 2006
Location: 10300 Antioch Rd. in Overland Park, KS. This was a large show with many new works on display.

Lacey took home 3rd Place in the 2D category! She displayed her work and performed a live portrait demo.

First Fridays: Lacey Lewis on Art Education 04-07-06
An extention of the previous month's discussion on realism, this presentation focuses on the impact of modernism on formal art education. New developments such as the reemergence of the atelier and a new focus on traditional methods will also be explored.

First Fridays: Lacey Lewis on Choosing Realism 03-03-06
A presentation and informal discussion on why Lacey chose to be a traditional realist even though, because of modernism, there are so many other choices. She also explored issues of the impact of modernist art on public opinion of the arts and artists themselves, and what developments currently relate to the promotion of and return to classic/traditional standards.
